Am I alone or are you counting down the days with the rest of us to December 25th? Have you been sucked into the vortex of black Friday and the impulsivity to overspend or get into debt? What warms my heart the most is when we are reminded of the true reason for this season… it’s Jesus.
He is a King of humble beginnings. His mother Mary did not arrive in a limo to the hospital, rather she rode in on a donkey. There was not a private suite on the labor and delivery floor. No, Mary and Joseph were fortunate to find a manger for her to give birth in. There was not a new bassinette with adorable bedding to lay her newborn King in, but a feed trough with a layer of hay to keep the baby warm.
“… she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.” Luke 2:7 (NIV)
His clothing bespoke anything but a garment of a King that has come to save the world. God provided all a young mother needed to give birth, provided all Joseph needed to lead his family, and provided all His Son, the Messiah Jesus needed to secure our Eternity in heaven.
Now don’t get me wrong, God wants us to have nice things. It is not a sin to drive a luxury car, live in a big, beautifully furnished home or wear lovely clothes or jewelry. It is, however, a matter of the heart and where your first fruits go to. God provides for all of us according to our need and most importantly, according to His clear and perfect will for our lives.
Is there a stirring in your heart to give more of your time, more of your gifting, more of your finances, or even simply to begin to give or serve on a regular basis? There’s no judgment here. This is a safe place of reflection because our offerings are vertical, between us and God alone.
God knows your heart. God knows my heart as well. Go to Him and ask what it is that He wants you to give or where He wants you to serve and then sit quietly and listen. He does not disappoint.
Run to Him. He is waiting…
