Unbroken

A True Story

With tears left at the alter this morning I was overwhelmed by the Spirit, not out of want or need, but out of the depths of gratitude in my soul for ALL God has delivered me from, restored in me and blessed me with.

This time last year I was coming out of a serious infection from a double mastectomy and reconstruction, and after being delivered from breast cancer. Not a day goes by, from the moment my eyes open until the moment they close for the evening, do I not give thanks and praise to King Jesus for all He revealed to me and His protection in healing me.

“Learn something from the worst thing that has ever happened to you.” Ps. Joe Champion

I boldly stand here today UNBROKEN. I am a witness to the miracles Christ performed in and through my cancer. I have learned so many things about my King. It was the most scary, the most beautiful and the most intimate time I have experienced in my life to this point with my Savior. Believe it or not, I would not trade the experience and growth I received through it for anything.

“A lot of people don’t know their time is short.” Ps. Joe Champion

When you’re a single mom to three young men/boys faced with a disease that kills many, make no mistake, in a flash you have an inventory of your life. You have a balance sheet, if you will, of how short your time is left on this earth.

“Prayer sets up your future.” Ps. Joe Champion

Pressing into Christ through prayer, for me, is like setting goals. If you never set goals you’ll never achieve them. Likewise, if you never, or rarely, pray, you severely limit the investment into your relationship with Him. He wants to spend time with us. He wants to provide all that we ask and can imagine. God already knows what he wants to do in our life.

Each summer at Celebration Church we have a series called Summer At The Movies. Each week we have a sermon around an epic Hollywood movie that our pastors relate to scripture. The messages are powerful and relatable to today. This week kicks off the series with the film Unbroken.

Unbroken is the awe-inspiring true story of Louis “Louies” Zamperini and his resilience, survival and redemption through being an Olympic athlete to a Prisoner of War (POW) during World War II. This is one story of one man who was determined to be unbroken.

Some of the clips from Unbroken were hard to watch. Mostly, because I knew they were based on real life events. Although the man character survived great torture, pain and suffering, some of us suffer a similar pain and torture on the inside, sometimes without anyone knowing.

Sadly, this series Summer At The Movies is not televised due to copyright laws, but I took as many notes and wrote down as many scriptures as my hand could write. I pray Ps. Joe’s message blesses you like it blessed those of us watching this week.

The eyes of the arrogant will be humbled
 and human pride brought low;
the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.  The Lord Almighty has a day in store
for all the proud and lofty,
for all that is exalted
 (and they will be humbled),
Isaiah 2:11-12 (NIV)

“It’s one thing to be punched by the devil, but your punches will come from your friends and your peers.” Ps. Joe Champion

Even my close friend,
someone I trusted,
one who shared my bread,
has turned against me.
Psalm 41:9 (NIV)

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Psalm 23:5 (NIV)

“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,” Ephesians 4:26 (NIV)

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ God for gave you.” Ephesians 4:31-32 (NIV)

  • Recognize No One Is Perfect

“Indeed, there is not a righteous man on earth who continually does good and who never sins.” Ecclesiastes 7:20 (NASB)

  • Relinquish Your Right To Get Even

“Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.” Romans 12:19 (NASB)

  • Respond To The Evil With Good

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21 (NASB)

  • Refocus God’s Plan For Your Life

“For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.” Matthew 6:14–15 (NASB)

“Maybe you’ve been punched, but the only way you’re going to live life is through the forgiveness of Christ.”  Ps. Joe Champion

And all God’s people said, AMEN!

Has there been a “what”, a “who”, or an “it” that has punched you? (betrayal of a friend, business partner, sickness, death, disease, job loss, loss of a dream, divorce)

As hard has “it” was, were you able to learn from it and apply any of the points Ps. Joe taught us about?

Can you list things you are grateful for because of “it”?

Are/were you able to see the protection or maybe even the wrath of God He provided through “it”?

Even in the most unfavorable of life’s events for me, I can see the protection, the lessons, the disciplines and love of God. I pray you can too.

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 (NASB)

May God continue to richly bless each one of you.

      1. Amen! He is our Great Physcian. And I think there is much insight into our lives with God to be gained from the good movies. Lord of the Rings and The Matrix are two of my favorites that have strong parallels with our spiritual reality. Good stuff!
