Take Captive

Take Captive

When bodies of water become swollen floodgates can be opened to relieve the buildup and overflow.  I’ve lived most of my life in Texas and here, “when it rains it pours” literally.  It doesn’t seem to take much rain at all to create major runoff and take us quickly to flood stage and flash flood warnings.

This time of year especially our emotions can act a lot like the Texas rains.  Past memories evoke thoughts and emotions that keep coming and keep coming, and if we aren’t careful, we are at flood stage, out of control, unmanageable, unhappy and unhealthy.

A friend of mine is having a difficult time with her mind being bombarded with negative and untrue thoughts.  Ps. Jimmy Evans taught me a long time ago that the only way to get rid of a thought is to replace it with another thought.

God gave us a creative mind, one that was designed after His. We must ” take captive every thought” and put it to work for us.

We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, … 2 Corinthians 10:5 (NASB)

The best way for me to replace the battles going on in my mind is to keep my mind so busy on repeating scripture that I can’t concentrate on the negative thoughts too.  By His strength I win the war of my mind

One of the very first scriptures I memorized was Proverbs 3:5-6.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NASB)

Line 1: Trust in the Lord with all your heart

The first line gives me immediate instruction. I think to myself, “Lord, you know I trust You completely.” It gives me something to do.

Line 2: And do not lean on your own understanding.

Another instruction follows the first. Our Lord is omnipotent I, of course, can’t lean on my own understanding. His ways are higher and far beyond I can even comprehend.

Line 3: In all your ways acknowledge Him,

For this verse, a third and final instruction. This one is easy for me.  When I repeat this verse in my mind or aloud I replace “Him” with a dialogue with Jesus and say, “In all my ways Lord I acknowledge you”.

Line 4: And He will make your paths straight.

I CAN DO THIS… If I am obedient and Trust in the Lord with all my heart, lean not on the battles going on in my mind or what I “think” is the best way, acknowledge the King of Kings then He surely will make my paths straight.  There is so much security and protection here. It covers me like a warm blanket would.

The enemy knows every weakness and will use every one of them to steal, kill & destroy you.  This is promised in John 10:10

Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them. The unfolding of your words gives light;… understanding to the simple. Psalm 119:129-130

The enemy may have power, but God gave us power AND authority.  We have the authority to decide what thoughts we entertain, how long they stay and how we react to them.

Going into the dormant winter months, as we approach the end of yet another year, and the holidays I pray that you take captive every thought and bring it into obedience with the truth.  You are beautiful. You are smart. You are highly esteemed. You are lovely. You are more valuable than rubies. You are worthy. I know it is the truth about you because He says so in scripture. Verse upon verse He lovingly tells you your worth in Him.  It’s in there.  The treasures are yours for the taking.

You can do this! He is waiting…

Grace wins, Mxo

Floodgates open of past sadness, hurt and fear
Through prayer Proverbs 3: 5-6 gratefully appears

Some say trust is earned while others give it willingly
Until a matter presents itself then retraction’s necessary

Keep your eyes affixed on the Most High King
Who gives abundant love, grace and peace ever-lasting.
